Expert Tips for Making Walking in Heels Less Painful

Some of us love wearing high heeled shoes, whenever we get a chance. Whether that be to the office, to a dinner, or a party, some find stilettos more appealing and are willing to suffer for the sake of fashion. Luckily, if you are one of these girls, follow our expect advice for easing this pain when you’re walking.

Imagine you are heading to your prom, the last thing you want to worry about whilst in your beautiful prom dresses is whether or not you will be able to walk in the heels you have chosen to match it. Walking in long prom dresses is difficult enough, and none of us want to get home from our day with blisters and sore aches, so here are six tips to make the experience more comfortable.

Tip #1: Choose the right size shoes
We cannot stress enough how important it is that your shoe fits you well, before you buy, check there is space between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. Check the width is ok for you too, this will help avoid more serious damage to your feet in the future such as bunions, neuromas and hammertoes.

Tip #2: Invest in high-quality shoes
It’s often not the case that the cheaper the better for shoes. We should spend a little more to ensure the shoe is made with good quality material, for example high-quality leather or breathable materials will mean less sweating or blistering. Lower quality material can make it harder for your feet to breathe and can be more rigid, sometimes cutting your feet.

Tip #3 Consider where you are walking
Will you be walking on concrete or grass? If so, choose a chunkier heel, it should be easier on your feet over time. Also, different heels wear differently depending on the surface, this is also something to keep in mind when planning your shoe attire for a trip for example. Thicker heels tend to provide more support in general, and are usually comfier to wear as they can give you more balance.

Tip #4: Break them in
No excuses, once you have invested in a new pair of heels, it is beneficial to stretch them out a little to increase their flexibility. You could either have a local cobbler do this, or wear your new shoes around the house several times before heading out.

Tip #5: Walk Differently
May sound strange, but walking in heels really is a science. We need to pay close attention to your whole body, engage your abs and walk heel-to-toe to try to protect your feet as much as possible.

Tip #6: Add an insole
Jessica, a designer at JJ’s House, suggests adding an insole to high-heeled shoes if you feel pain at the toe cap. She recommends placing memory foam under the insole to increase comfort, in this position it also maintains the design of the shoe.

We hope you have found these six tips useful, let us know if you have any other clever ideas about how to make it easier to walk in heels.
